Walking on the Yorkshire Coast

Our coastal resort of Scarborough is blessed with golden beaches, clifftop walks, forest trails and stunning views of land and sea. From the Park Manor Hotel, the Cleveland Way National Trail is literally a 2-minute walk away. This sometimes arduous, long-distance walk has a breathtakingly beautiful coastal stretch. This section takes in Filey, Cayton Bay, South Bay and the Marine Drive.

It wends its way past the SeaLife Sanctuary on its way to Cloughton, Hayburn Wyke, Boggle Hole, Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby and beyond. Good footwear, walking gear and distance experience is needed to tackle this stretch. However, if you fancy a more leisurely stroll, then the famous Marine Drive, which connects North Bay and South Bay in Scarborough, is a much flatter, easier walk. It is just a few minutes’ wander from the Park Manor Hotel. There are countless public footpaths to choose from as well, from short strolls to much longer ones. These include the Tabular Hills, the Hole of Horcum and other walks in the North York Moors National Park.

Cycling on the Yorkshire Coast

The Park Manor welcomes cyclists with a cycle lock-up store for your bike storage.  As well as being able to cycle around the Marine Drive, you can travel to Dalby Forest near Pickering for varied (some difficult) routes. There is also the Cinder Track between Scarborough and Whitby which is good for long cycle rides.  The track follows the old railway route between the two towns. The distance is 42-miles in total and it is a linear route that will take you most of the day to tackle safely.

Surfing the Yorkshire Way

With the tides, wind and moon predicting our tides, surfers have known for many years how good our town’s surfing is. Previous years, Scarborough has hosted its own Surfing Festival and it is due to be held again in October 2022. You might have your own board but if not, then there are surf schools for equipment hire, and for nervous beginners upwards … go on, you might love it!

Water Babies!

As well as our own fabulous indoor swimming pool, Scarborough is blessed with the North Sea.  Wild swimming is popular and although experience is needed, it is something everyone should try at least once. Anyone thinking of trying it must have the right guidance and understanding of this popular sport.  Within a few minutes’ walk from the Park Manor, discover Alpamare, Yorkshire’s premier waterpark with slides, an infinity pool and more.

If you love outdoor water sports, then North Yorkshire Water Park is the place to go.  It is on the outskirts of Scarborough, just a few miles from West Ayton. Or if you like something a bit tamer and lots fun, then Peasholm Park’s boating lake is always ‘oarsome’!  Why not hop aboard a pedal-driven dragon boat?  If you come to stay in Scarborough, this is one of the ‘must do’ experiences!

Bowling Fun

Scarborough is home to several bowling greens as well as Scarborough’s Bowls Centre. And if you love ten pin bowling, then the Olympia overlooking Scarborough’s South Bay will help you have that ‘strike’ you’ve always wanted!

Oliver’s Mount

As one of the best places to see Scarborough, Oliver’s Mount has a reputation for also being one of the best road racing circuits in the country.  While the recent events have put a stop to the racing, races such as the Barry Sheene Classic take place at this location.

Golf in Scarborough

If you’re inspired by Matt Fitzpatrick’s recent win at the US Open (he’s a Yorkshire lad!), then Scarborough’s one the best places to ‘tee off’. See our golf packages for local courses including North Cliff, South Cliff, Filey and Ganton golf courses. Our town is also home to a number of putting greens and of course crazy golf … well, you’d be daft not to! Scarborough Golf Week also takes place each September.

Cricket in Scarborough

Love it … or loathe it! … Scarborough is known for its cricketing calibre.  Scarborough Cricket Ground is just a ten-minute walk from the Park Manor Hotel in North Marine Road. Scarborough Cricket Festival is also one of the key events of the year!

The Beautiful Game

Football is easily one of the world’s most popular sports. Scarborough has its own football team, Scarborough Athletic. The relatively new football ground, the Flamingo Land Stadium, is a short drive or bus journey from the hotel if you fancy attending a game. Later in 2022, the World Cup takes place and you can enjoy watching the matches on terrestrial TV in your room.

Scarborough Rugby

Scarborough also has its own rugby club just outside Scalby village.  Scarborough RUFC has five senior sides and it also has its own café onsite.

Calling All Runners!

If you are a runner then Scarborough is a fabulous place to go for a personal best!  Strenuous cliff climbs, peaceful forest trails, public parks such as Peasholm, South Cliff and Falsgrave, and the Cinder Track offer a varied terrain whatever your running ability.  If you want to go for a speed run, then there are flatter routes while you can really go for the burn if you run on the beach!

Skateboarding and Scootering

Often thought to be just for younger sports stars, Scarborough’s Hairy Bob’s Skate Park is ideal for both skateboards and scooters. This skate park includes a volcano spine, a pump bump, two speed bowls and a hip on one side.  There is also a long quarter pipe and an unusually shaped hipped bank. The surfaces are smooth and this facility is well used by locals and visitors alike.

Indoor sports

Of course, we never really know what the weather will do, so Scarborough is blessed with indoor facilities, too. The Scarborough Bowls Centre is a hop, skip and jump away with its indoor and outdoor greens. The Everyone Active Scarborough Sports Village is also a short drive away.

Life on the Ocean Wave

You can’t be on the coast without enjoying the bracing sea breezes! Scarborough makes the most of its maritime links with boat trips available from Scarborough Harbour next to the South Bay. Speedboat rides to fishing trips are available to give passengers a glimpse of life at sea. During the summer, pods of dolphins and porpoises are often seen just off the coast.  Surely this is one way to enjoy the fresh air and the great outdoors!  Angling is also popular in the town and there has been an annual Angling Festival held in November in previous years.

Retail Therapy

Some would say this is a sport in itself! Yet Scarborough’s picturesque town centre is home to big brand such as JD Sports, Sports Direct, Mountain Warehouse, along with boutique-style independents such as the Secret Surf Spot, Bjorn Clogs and others.

Some Scarborough Sporting Facts

Scarborough’s Race for Life takes place each July and is hugely popular. Scarborough’s Santa Dash takes place along Scarborough Sea Front in aid of Saint Catherine’s Hospice in the winter. Scarborough has its own three peaks: Scarborough Castle Headland, Jacob’s Mount and Oliver’s Mount. Scarborough has also hosted important stages of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race. Scarborough was once a place for the elite sport of tunny fishing.
