Did you know that a flamingo’s eye is bigger than its brain? This is just the sort of fascinating fact you will discover in the lively and entertaining zoo section of Flamingo Land. If you are visiting Yorkshire with your family, and need to cater for both older and younger children, a day out at this attraction is perfect. With a well-stocked zoo to delight all age groups, white-knuckle theme park rides for older kids and toddler rides for little ones, everyone is catered for. Flamingo Land is set in 375 acres of beautiful Yorkshire countryside, and the attraction provides a huge range of facilities. Food outlets are on hand for lunch, drinks and snacks to keep your energy levels up. So what will you find there?

The Zoo

Flamingo Land is one of Yorkshire’s most popular family attractions, and boasts the title of ‘The UK’s Most Visited Zoo’. This year, Abi the camel gave the zoo a new camel calf, and two mongoose lemurs were added to the menagerie. The zoo is committed to conservation education and children are encouraged to learn about natural habitats and animal preservation. There is an extensive collection of animals to look at, from furry mammals to creepy crawlies, and snakes. Keeper talks run throughout the day, so plan your time around the animals you want to see. Times for Giraffe, Hippo, Baboon, Lemur, Tiger, Penguin and Flamingo Keeper talks can be found here. Timings for shows can be found here, including Sea Lions, Birds and other child-friendly events. Take a cable car or monorail ride around the park to get the full picture.

Theme Park

You will certainly need plenty of energy for the theme park at Flamingo Land. Top rides for adrenalin junkies are Mumbo Jumbo, Cliff Hanger, Velocity and Kumali. Velocity is the UK’s only motorbike launch rollercoaster. It’s a pilgrimage destination for coaster fanatics. This year the park has made an £8m investment in the spectacular HERO rollercoaster – which was specially designed for them by rollercoaster legend Werner Stengel.

It’s not all white-knuckle rides, of course. For smaller children there are plenty of little rides and play areas. You can see a list of them here. We particularly like Splish Splosh, where their task is to avoid the water jets – or set them off! It is built around a three-mast ship, with its own beach. There are far too many attractions to list, so look at Flamingo Land’s superb website for more details and an interactive guide.
