Feeling peckish? You don’t have to stick to fish and chips in Whitby, as there are some great alternatives, from modern to traditional cuisine. We’ve put together a list of our favourite Whitby restaurants – all tried and tested and absolutely superb.

The Magpie Cafe

14 Pier Road, Whitby, YO21 3PU.
Tel: 01947 602058

Everyone notices the queues outside the famous Magpie seafood Cafe in Whitby. Overlooking the harbour, diners have an excellent view of the sea, the Abbey and St Mary’s Church. The building dates right back to 1750. Nominated by The Good Food Guide by customers, you can trust the Magpie to provide fresh locally caught seafood and a great panorama.

Green’s of Whitby

13 Bridge Street, Whitby YO22 4BG.
Tel. 01947 600284

This multi-award winning restaurant & bistro is close to beautiful Whitby Harbour, and is perfect if you fancy a change from fish and chips. There is a bistro downstairs and a more formal restaurant upstairs, where you can enjoy food prepared Rob and Emma Green, the proprietors. Meats and game are a speciality, but Rob is also a National Seafood Chef of the Year, so fish is also a real treat here too.

26 Skinner Street, Whitby YO21 3AJ
01947 601404

This small, contemporary restaurant dominates the review section of Trip Advisor – coming out as the best restaurant in the town. Its relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff mean that the twenty covers it caters for always have a superb experience. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash

163 Church Street, Whitby YO22 4AS
Tel: 01947 606444

This little gem of a restaurant simply serves beautiful homemade pies. Chicken and Cider; Lamb, Leek and Rosemary and Slow Braised Steak and Stout were on the menu at the time of writing, but fillings change depending on what is in season. They also serve outstanding Yorkshire sausages with mash, peas and gravy. Simple, delicious food, with rave reviews. A sixteenth Century building with an open fire makes the Pie ‘n’ Mash a cosy hideaway. Vegetarian options available.

The Vault

1 Skinner Street, The Resolution, Whitby YO21 3AH, England
Tel 01947 602085

Another special venue, The Vault is set in the basement of the Resolution Hotel in Skinner Street. Regularly attracting great reviews, this is an atmospheric location for dinner. Guests particularly praise the high quality of service they receive, the excellent value and tastiness of the food. The venue has an ‘Upper Deck’ bar for a pre-dinner drink, and live music is provided here on some weekends. Hip and happening venue, which has local tongues wagging.
